The Santa Cruz Trek starts with a steep uphill climb out of the town of Cashapampa, an hour or so out of Caraz.

You enter the narrow gorge of the Rio Santa Cruz. This is historically the main walking route across the Andes.

The start is green & rural.

Transportation details:

Motor Caraz to Cashapampa by shared taxi departing from the eastern end of the central market. Enquire in Caraz. Cost in 2005 was S5 plus an extra sole for a gringo backpack.
