Details — Accommodation

Consider 5 main choices for accommodation the night before the hike.

  1. Taupo
  2. Turangi
  3. National Park
  4. Whakapapa Village
  5. DOC Camping

Taupo has the most to offer, then Turangi, in terms of getting supplied for a multi-day hike. Since transport is just as convenient from the larger towns, we recommend them.

If you prefer to stay closer, consider staying in National Park town or Whakapapa Village, both festive.

Turangi is well known to fishermen; one of a number of self-declared Trout Fishing Capitals of the World.

Want a hostel? Try Rainbow Lodge in Taupo first. Then Extreme Backpackers <e-mail> in Turangi, funky with its own climbing wall. National Park Backpackers in National Park has a wall as well.
