How up-to-date is this information?

Each page has the most recent date of revision posted at the bottom.

Conditions change in the mountains on a day to day, hour to hour basis. Expect the unexpected. Be ready for anything, especially wind & rain. (These volcanos are not extinct. The Circuit is sometimes shut down due to risk of volcanic activity.)

That said, the main advantage of the Internet is currency. This site is as up-to-date as the last hiker who e-mailed to advise us of new issues on the Track.

Who is i-NEEDtoknow.com?

We are hiking enthusiasts using the Internet to provide up-to-date advice. Though based in Canada, we hope to expand this site to (one day) include more of the great multi-day treks of the world — especially in New Zealand.

This website is a resource for those aspiring to hike the Tongariro Circuit & an archive for those who have tramped it.

What is the difference between the:

• Tongariro Northern Circuit, and the
• Tongariro Crossing?

The Circuit is a multi-day hike circuiting a volcano.

The Crossing is a day hike, crossing between two volcanos, 17km.

Actually, the Crossing is part of the Circuit so if you choose to do the Circuit, you will also have done the Crossing (and enjoyed the experience more). This website is dedicated to the Circuit.
