FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What does it cost to hike the Northern Circuit?

updated In 2004 prices went up. During the hiking season (late October to early June) budget for:

  • NZ$30 / night for hut bed when you purchase in advance or NZ$35 / night on-the-spot, space allowing, ... or
  • NZ$20 / tent / night when you advance purchase, NZ$25 on-the-spot

Hut beds are no longer inexpensive, in our opinion. The price increase, plus the increase in value of the NZ dollar against other currencies makes those beds pricey. Tent if you can. Especially at Ketetahi Hut which is often full Saturday nights & school holidays. Beds are snapped up first-come, first-served.

Pay in advance, for sure. DOC offices, Visitor Centres & some hotels can arrange this for you.

There are discounts for Youth (age 11-17). Younger children are free.

There are discounts off-season.

Transportation will cost you too, unless you have your own vehicle:.

  • about NZ$40 / person for bus transport to & from Taupo

It might cost you less than $40 depending where you are coming from, going to, and which bus company you choose.

Buses will pick you up & drop you off at your hotel. Very convenient.

No cash is needed on the hike as there is no place to spend it except at the finish in Whakapapa Village.
