FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Who should hike the Track?

Any reasonable fit hiker who can carry a pack 7 hours / day can do the Circuit in summer. Only 2 sections are moderately difficult:

  • Devil's Staircase (day 1)
  • descent from Emerald Lakes (day 2)

We did see 2 very petite ladies give up on the Circuit, completing only the (very long) first day. They found their packs were too heavy relative to body weight. The Devil's Staircase almost killed them.

Who should NOT hike the Circuit?

NOT those with chronic knee, ankle or back injuries

Its a well trod trail, but there are rough, steep & muddy bits.

Can I hike it alone?

Yes. Many do. It's no problem.

During the high season there is a good chance you will meet & join up with other hikers.

Be sure to bring an emergency whistle if you do hike solo. In case you sprain an ankle you can rouse help quickly. Never side trip alone.

Is the Circuit now too crowded?

Crowded? We have never seen any hike, anywhere as crowded as the start of the Tongariro Crossing. It seems more a sacred mountain pilgrimage than fun walking in the mountains.

On a summer day with good weather over a thousand hikers can be strung out over the Devil's Staircase.

Should you be outraged? Boycott Tongariro?

No, go with the flow ....

Once you turn off the Crossing into the desert, you can enjoy a lot of solitude & quiet on this trek.

Should I join an organized tour?

We are independent hikers. This website is designed for those who like to organize their own trip.

But no, it is not necessary to join a tour if you have your own gear and any kind of multi-day hiking experience.
