Yes. In fact we once thought we had taken a wrong turn, confused by outdated information on the location of Waihohonu Hut. Bring a compass & some kind of a map. Most of the time it is difficult to go wrong, especially as the volcanos provide massive landmarks. No routefinding is required. Kiwi hiking is normally hut hiking. But if the weather is good, we recommend tenting the Tongariro Circuit. The huts are standard:
Not bad. But far inferior to those on the Milford Track, by comparison. The tenting options are all good, all interesting, though Ketetahi sometimes gets full. Of course tenters can use all the facilities of the huts. Will a cell phone work on the Circuit? Normally yes. Bring one if you can. We strongly recommend disinfectant gel (sometimes called instant hand sanitizer) which you use to clean your hands before snack breaks & after toilet stops in the woods.
