FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What footwear is best for the Track?

You want to wear what fits you best & what works for you. No blisters!

Most experts recommend hiking boots. Modern boots are remarkably light & comfortable. A pair of good boots & gaiters make you feel invincible in mud & scree.

Bring a light second pair of light footwear for evenings.

Can I fish on the Circuit?

Yes, but few hikers seem to. The itinerary is busy & we have not heard of any fish in these streams. Please e-mail if this is incorrect. A licence is required, of course.

Nearby is some of the best trout fishing in the World! Schedule fishing before or after the hike.

Where should I buy food & supplies?

Food & basics are available in Taupo & Turangi — you may find it difficult to get supplied in National Park or Whakapapa village.

Can I buy food en route?

No, nothing is available until you finish at Whakapapa Village.

Parking at the Trailhead?

We have not parked at any of the trailheads, prefering to leave vehicles at a hotel & hop on a convenient shuttle bus. Certainly there is no secure parking.

Your valuables should be safe in your vehicles in New Zealand — though if you are staying in a Hotel or B&B you are advised to make arrangements to store valuables there.

Are there toilets on the Circuit?

Yes, it is fairly well provided for with toilets every hour or two.

Trampers still need to carry toilet paper, a lighter, and alcohol gel to disinfect your hands.

If you happen to get the urge to purge somewhere between toilets, be prepared.

Are there showers?

No showers on the Northern Circuit, mate. Brave hikers wash-up in the creeks en route. Cowards can take a sponge bath with water heated on a stove.
