Routes Day 2 Ketetahi Hut to Waihohonu HutSuck it up, buttercup. Put on the pack and climb back up the mountain to continue The Circuit of Ruapehu. This is your last big climb. It takes 2 - 3 hours to return to Emerald Lakes. Enjoy your second chance at the Lakes. You have more time today than yesterday so linger longer. The lakes will be less crowded too as you will be there earlier than the day hikers.
At the lakes take the signposted turn towards Oturere. You may curse the surprisingly difficult 200m descent; steep, slippery & awkward. The scorched & blasted lava flow at the bottom is much different than the walking day 1. New Zealand's only desert, this section is fascinating. It is a shame the Tongoriro Crossing hikers miss this experience.
After the mobs on the track the previous day, this section is empty, peaceful desert. You will see few hikers as most walk in the same direction. The route generally follows Oturere stream. The scenery gets more interesting as you wind through bizarre volcanic rocks. There is a strange beauty & you want to keep your camera at the ready.
Like yesterday, there is very little protection from sun & wind. Stop for sure at Oturere Hut.
A few minutes walk from the Hut, in the middle of the desert, is a terrific waterfall. Leave your pack at the hut. It is about a 10 minute walk to the falls though the path is somewhat of a scramble. There are lovely views & you may want to take a wash-up in the stream. Oturere has a nice location & good tent sites. You could stay here but we recommend you carry on to Waihohonu Hut. The track heads away in the direction of Ruapehu. The arid scenery changes again. There is plenty of variety.
After 2 days of volcanic landscape, hikers are relieved to reach the forest approaching Waihohonu. You cross a bridge over the upper Waihohonu stream, turn right at the junction, take a long climb up though beech forest. When you start descending again you know you are close. Smile when you spot Waihohonu Hut in the green trees you will be a happy camper. This is another long exposed hiking day.
The hut is standard. But the camping area by the river is spacious, offering many nice sites, some protected in the trees. |
