Routes Day 1 Mangatepopo Rd to Devil's StaircaseOn a nice day hundreds of hikers arrive at the Mangatepopo Rd trailhead between 7 - 8:30am. Most arrive with only a day pack, psyched for the Tongoriro Crossing day hike. We recommend Tongoriro Circuit hikers start here too try to enjoy the buzz of the mob. For many day hikers Tongariro is a tourist event which happens to involve hiking. Remember your sunscreen, hat & clothes. Protect yourself from burning rays. Many, many hikers are sunburned. There is very little shade.
Take advantage of the trailhead toilet. The next one is at the start of the Devil's Staircase, perhaps 90 minutes away.
If you must avoid the crowd, start at dawn perhaps stay at Mangatepopo Hut (1180m), the night before.
You will enjoy a pleasant start to the day in desert terrain, climbing a gentle valley along the Mangatepopo stream. Most hikers rush past the short side track to Soda Springs, a nice diversion which we recommend. Some are disappointed to find the waterfall Springs not hot though they are slightly smelly. Next is the toughest section of the Circuit, the Devil's Staircase, a steep climb though lava boulders up to the saddle between two volcanoes. Day hikers can sometimes dash the staircase without a break. If you are carrying a full pack, we recommend you go slow, take your time. On a clear day you may be able to see the volcano Taranaki on the west coast.
