Accommodation in Port Renfrew

This is a classic end-of-the-line town with about 300 full-time residents. The population goes up during the summer, especially during fishing season.

We love this town. It's an end-of-the-world experience.

Port Renfrew bills itself as a “Diamond in the Rough”, but it’s a rough-cut diamond, at best.

It is difficult to believe you are so near to prim & genteel Victoria, capital of British Columbia.

When you get to the dock, look for otters. There were Orca, mother and young, feeding at the river mouth in September ’99.

Shop for your WCT war prize souvenir at the “Trailhead Store”, an outdoor gear and gift shop. (Careful -- the parrot bites.) Consider purchasing a souvenir crafted by local artisans.

Hotels

Recommended hotels include:

The West Coast Trail Motel is clean, pleasant, modern. The food is great!

The Trailhead Resort has been recommended to us as by far the best place to stay in Port Renfrew.

Formerly we recommended the Port Renfrew Hotel. But a fire destroyed it. Damn.

The bar is still there. Food recommended! You’ll feel right at home if you are a long-haired, bearded fisherman or lumberjack.

Coastal Kitchen is another strong recommendation in Port Renfrew.

Other Port Renfrew accommodation options include:

Camping

There is a very convenient campground beside the Gordon River trailhead cabin. One section is designated for West Coast Trail hikers.

If you have extra time in Port Renfrew, it is only about 17 km to the largest Douglas Fir in Canada, perhaps 1000 years old. Ask in town for directions. The road is absolutely horrible to drive — you need a very rugged vehicle.
