FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

How do I Walk-on to the WCT?

If you are hiking solo you may be able to simply Walk-on at the Trailhead. Every day 10 Walk-ons (5 at either end) can buy Permits. It’s first-come, first-served so be waiting early in the morning before the trailhead office opens. People are often waiting by 7 or 8 am.

A few days before you try to Walk-on, you should inquire as to your chances are by phoning the Trailhead(s) directly:

  • Port Renfrew (Gordon River WCT Registration) -- 250 647-5434 (phone & FAX)
  • Bamfield (Pachena Bay WCT Registration) -- 250 728-3234 (phone & FAX)

Invariably they will tell you that you may have to wait for up to 3 days. (Our experience has been that we can often Walk-on if we camp at the Trailhead the night prior, even during high season. The longest we've waited is 1 day.)

Sometimes you can buy the Permit of someone who reserved but did not show. Unclaimed Permits may be sold at 1 pm.

If you try to Walk-on in Port Renfrew — and are denied — you could start hiking in the other direction on the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail instead for which no permit is required. Port Renfrew is the trailhead for both hikes.

What if I can’t get a Reservation for the date I want?

Many are disappointed this way every year — especially those who don't have much flexibility time-wise.

If you don’t want to take the risk trying to Walk-on, we suggest 2 alternatives:

The Juan de Fuca is similar to the West Coast Trail though not as isolated nor quite as challenging. The Nootka is a wilder, more remote coastal hike.
