Which is better, the forest trail or the coastline?
Many times you must choose between two trails on the WCT.
As a general rule, most hikers prefer the tidal shelf to the forest. At low tide, when the weather is good, the shelf is faster and easier. The coastal views are spectacular & the hiking offers more variety.
But in poor weather, at higher tides, & when the waves are high, we flee for the trees.
Hiking the sand beach is great for a while. But sooner or later most tire of slogging sand & head inland.
Watch for coloured beach marker buoys placed high in the trees. These mark the beach access points from the forest trail.
In our recommended Routes, we give specific advice.
