Strategy for Hiking the WCT

We recommend you stay on the coast until forced inland by weather, tides or impassable headlands. The coastal route is more scenic & usually preferable — especially on the tidal shelf which can be like walking on a sidewalk.

As with all of the coastal hikes of the Pacific NW, look for fishing floats in the trees marking beach access points. (Beach floats also mark all manner of other things.

You may tire of slogging through sand on the long beaches. If you do, head for the trees for a change.

Keep checking with oncoming hikers to compare upcoming forest vs coastal routes. Your best route changes with the tides & weather.

If you have time, take a rest when the sun comes out. Hang up your wet clothes. If it rains you’ll stay warmer hiking.
