Every hiker takes the ferry across Nitinat Narrows, a dangerous, swift, deep tidal waterway. You can't drink this water but often the boatman will have refreshments for sale.
The boatman is Carl Edgar Jr., ... or one of his family or friends. Carl is one of the great characters of the west coast & it is a great pleasure to chat with him at the crossing. In recent years the boat launch has expanded to include a simple restaurant sometimes offering crab & fish. They even have t-shirts for sale!

The ferry normally runs between 9 am & 5 pm, May 1 - September 30th. There is no other way to cross but by boat. Be aware that a number have drowned here.

Headed for Bamfield, if the boat is not there when you arrive, set down your pack & relax. The boatman should return soon.
Its a relatively easy & beautiful hike from here to Tsusiat Falls.
Near km 28 on the forest Trail between Tsusiat Point & Tsuquadra Point you will see a huge cave which provides shelter from the rain. If you take the beach to Hole in the Wall at Tsusiat Point you may miss the cave and visa versa, if you take the forest Trail you may miss Hole in the Wall.

Headed for Port Renfrew arriving at Nitinat, you may need to wait a while until the boatman makes a crossing. No rush.
Departing the Narrows it's a short walk to the lovely suspension bridge over the Cheewhat River.

Cheewhat suspension bridge.
